| | | 2 moths that i would like confirmation on my identification Hi I have been taking more moth pics and have found 2, both of which i think i have been able to identify but would appreciate confirmation, one i think is a Ribband wave, i guessed it was a wave because the shape looked very similar to the dwarf cream wave that was identified here, what has confused me slightly is how the markings look quite different depending on how the light hits it, I took 2 photos, one showing it which looks very similar to photos i have seen of the ribband wave, but the other photo makes it look quite different in that the darker band seems to extend right to the edges of the wings. The other picture i think is a Garden grass veneer, i noticed it on my kitchen door about an hour ago and what caught my eye was the golden coloured edge of the wings, and also the strange shape with its wings folded, when i looked at the photo, i could see it had a long snout and this was a helpful id feature, with that i was able to quickly discover it was a cranbid moth of some kind and after checking several photos came to the conclusion it was the garden grass veneer.
What do you think? |

| | | Re: 2 moths that i would like confirmation on my identification I think you are correct on both accounts. The level of exposure and angle of light can alter the appearance of many moths quite dramatically. I often bracket my exposures deliberately to make sure I get a shot that most resembles what I see.

| | | Re: 2 moths that i would like confirmation on my identification Thanks Rob and Peter, seems like my moth identification skills are improving! i didn't even have to look at any photos of the Ribband wave moth, I was able to tell strait away it was some kind of wave moth!
Good idea with bracketing the exposures, although i dont have a proper dslr camera, my camera does allow me to control the exposure allowing up to 15 seconds, so i will try the bracketing next time, although in this case i think it was more of the angle of light that was making the Ribband wave look slightly different.
Hope i find more moths to id tonight! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
