| | | first try with diy actinic moth trap . Hi everyone . Just going to let people know about my first attempt at moth trapping with my 20w actinic moth (skinner , built it me self , lamp (not tube) from paul batty )
Until now I had used an ordinary 11w bulb and only caught about 10 moths at a time .......it was all to change .
Well here is the list .
Elephant hawkmoth x1
Buff tip x1
buff arches x1
swallow tailed moth x1
Buff ermine x14
scalloped oak x3
garden carpet x1
white satin x1
heart and dart x4
Varied cornet x1
golden plusia x1
common quaker x3
Dark arches x4
Double square spot x1
37 moths , 14 species including a hawkmoth , very pleased with my handy work . That said some people have been catching "heart and dart x49 " with mv . Not bad for 19quid : fitting 5 pounds from ebay , lamp 14 pounds from Paul batty , and wood that I nabbed out of a skip ........
Hope fully it is a sign of things to come .... off to france at weekend ...hopefully mass deaths head and Oelander hawkmoth mania (joking ,well about the hawkmoths..)

Just one query - it's a bit late for Common Quaker. |

I'd love to try my hands at moth trapping, wouldn't know where to start though!
Well done on your list

| | | Re: first try with diy actinic moth trap . Hi Nige ...my first trap , last summer was just a big cardboard box (get on from the corner shop ) with two of the flaps down inside the box in a v shape (leave a small 3 cm gap ) , a kind of funnel .. type "skinner moth trap into the net and you will find no end of plans and designs ...
Even an ordinary bulb (10w or so ) will catch about 20 moths in the hight season ....
A addictive hobby ...When you get hooked invest in either actinic , or Mercury vapour . Paul batty is the best and cheapest supplier of mothing kit out there ....
