| | | Book on moths Hi,
After seeing a eyed hawk moth in my garden I wish to buy a book on moths, I am a complete beginner though. I see Collins and DK have books. Any recommendations for a beginners book for the britsh isles? The reason will be for help in identifying the moths in my garden as now I cant stop spotting different types and only have a very basic childrens book.
thanks in advance |

| | | Re: Book on moths I recommend the Concise Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland by Townsend, Waring & Lewington. Not sure if it's a beginners book, but it's well laid out with beautiful paintings of moths in their natural resting positions - with brief information about the moths on the page opposite the illustrations.
The Field Guide (by the same authors) is more comprehensive, but I find I use it less for quick ID checking than I do the Concise guide.
Some people prefer British Moths and Butterflies: A Photographic Guide by Manley.
It's useful to take photographs to examine at leisure - and post to forums such as this for assistance with ID. |

I haven't seen the Concise guide, but I'd recommend Manley's book any day. |

As Rachel says.
I have the first and third book on her list which are both very good and if I get really stuck (or lazy ) I ask on here.
