ID a hawk moth please

Hi all,
I found this moth which i assume is a hawk moth in my garden today. I am guessing it could be a eyed hawk moth rather than a poplar moth. It was very big for a moth and did not seem to have much colouring, looked velvety smooth and darker on its head almost like a head cap. I know very little about moths but was just fascinated by its size.
Any ideas as my ID is just a guess.

I'm not an expert and I've not seen one myself, but looking in my Moth book I think you are correct about Eyed Hawkmoth. The forewing pattern, 'black cap' and the way it holds its hind wings all seem right to me. I've seen a Poplar Hawkmoth, and it doesn't look like one of those.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.
