| | | Raising Moths As suggested by Jules (Wild-Woman), I have started a thread to show the developing stages of the moth caterpillars I have at home.
Spindle Ermine Caterpillar (on the Spindle tree in my garden)
Spindle Ermine Cocoon (now in a container)
Spindle Ermine Caterpillars (on the Spindle tree in my garden)
Spindle Ermine Cocoons (still on the plant)
Spectacle Moth Caterpillar (found round the corner from my house, now in a container with nettle food plant)
White Ermine & eggs (from the night trapping at Priory Water)
The White Ermine eggs have hatched into microscopic black caterpillars.
Will post a photo when they are big enough to focus on.
They are in they're own container with nettle food plant aswell.
I have never tried this before, so I have no idea if I'll be successful or not.
I do hope so!
Time will tell!

| | | Re: Rearing Moths The Spectacle Moth caterpillar has now encased itself inside one of the nettle leaves.
I don't know how long this stage takes.
None of the other caterpillars or cocoons have changed as yet.

| | | Re: Rearing Moths Yippee, I'm a moth Mummy!
Went to the shed to put the trap out tonight & checked on my guests.
The Spindle Ermine in the pot has emerged!
Hopefully I'll see it in the trap in the morning.

Interesting thread. Hopefully other moth rearers will join in too.

Interesting thread. Hopefully other moth rearers will join in too. | Morning Jules!
The eggs hatched into minute caterpillars.
I put them into a large pot with their food source plant, nettles, but they didn't survive!
Don't know why.
Having said that, there were a few midges in with them & a tiny green spider!
Oh god, do you think the spider ate them?
Fingers crossed that a moth or 2 that I fridge after a trapping session may lay some eggs for a second flight season.
Then I can try again!
Yes, please, anyone else who is attempting to rear moths, feel free to add your efforts to this thread.
You'd be very welcome!
I was very excited yesterday when my Spectacle moth emerged!
A great feeling of satisfaction.
