Popular Hawk Moth-Common to West of Ireland?

I have just found a splendid large moth on the wall of my house. I took a photo of him but have already discovered by looking in the images here that he is a poplar hawk moth.

I have never seen such a moth before. Are they common to the West of Ireland?

They seem to be common throughout all of the British Isles and Ireland, I would love to see one myself!

Hi Rain - Poplar Hawk-moths are common and widespread all over Ireland, but if you check it out on the MothsIreland distribution map you'll see that the previous earliest flight time was April 30th. Lots of species are being recorded several weeks early this year.

Thank you for the replies Anzu and Jenny. My moth friend stayed on my wall all day until about 5.45pm. It was lovely to see him and it is exciting to think our sighting was one of the earliest recorded.
