| | | Re: Mothing 2011 Well done MetalMoth, I've also posted one or two into the trap recently! Worth continuing, as there have been some late records of moths such as Ingrailed Clay and Large Nutmeg, also some of the Spring ones have emerged early, including Hebrew Character, all due to the very mild weather it seems. |

I put my trap out last night, and also got a December moth. I also had two Mottled Umbers. |

Mainly on the size of it compared to the winter moth is saw a few days ago - see seperate post, also the more silky (almost a satin sheen) and the paler underwing.
Here is another photograph. It was taken tonight of a different specimen, which looks similar.
I was pretty certain but, now I have doubt! Maybe with 20-20 hindsight I should have asked for a second opinion rather than claim it as a definite.
Any guidence would be welcome.

| | | Re: Mothing 2011 Looks like the Winter Moths I've been seeing recently, but then I haven't seen a Northern Winter Moth to compare. Have you sent photos to your county recorder?
Cheers,

| | | Re: Mothing 2011 Hi reefbirder,
If I'm ever less than 100% sure on a moth's identification, I send off my photos to my county recorder, and then decide.
I think it's a Winter Moth but please don't change your mind on my attempts of a Winter Moth id, I would try and find someone with a bit more experience, Northern Winter Moths do exist in smaller numbers apparently, although according to W&T they tend to get overlooked.
Cheers,
Julian |

| | | Re: Mothing 2011 Thanks Julian,
Having done a lot of searching on the net, I would have to agree on the id as Winter Moth. The first one I had was tiny which threw me.
Oh well, don't want to be a stringer - . But I guess it is another one to look forward to.
