A tough moth - need id, please

I found a moth on the outside of the back door on Thursday evening, as the outside temperatures were plummetting to below freezing. I have no idea what species it is, so any id would be welcome.

looks like a male Winter Moth (Operophtera brumata)

or Northern Winter Moth (Operophtera fagata) to me

but depends what size it was ? - O. brumata is fairly small and the northern one is distinctively larger
