| | | Moth for ID I came across this moth furiously flapping its wings whilst hanging from a holly leaf. I observed it for a short time and concluded it had become stuck.

Processing the image I noted what appears to be an egg emerging. This is a crop to show this.
Not having noted this before, I assisted the moth by releasing it to the ground.

This leads me to ask:
1. What is the ID of the moth?
2. Is this an egg?
3. Was my assumption correct that the moth was stuck on the holly leaf?
Thanks for viewing and I look forward to understanding more.

| | | Re: Moth for ID Hi, it looks like a Shuttle-shaped Dart to me and I would guess that it is laying an egg which may have caused the wing flapping (keeping it's position) as opposed to being stuck, but I've not borne witness to this personally so could be wrong.

Jo | Thank you Jo
I have looked up your suggested ID and you are spot on .
The other thing I found was that Holly is not their food plant so it would seem unlikely that she was laying eggs on the leaf. I wonder if anyone can clarify this?
Thanks
