| | | Macro/micro categorisation Evening all, is there a list anywhere of which species fall into which category? In Hampshire there is a separate County Recorder for Macros and Micros and I want to make sure I send the right records to the right person!
Thanks, Jo

| | | Re: Macro/micro categorisation Getting to know the families helps- once you know which family they are in you can determine whether they are considered macro or micro, as it isn't just to do with size! Eg. some micros such as Small Magpie or Mother of Pearl are larger than some of the macros such as the minors.
If you have a copy of Waring/Lewington then that covers all the UK macros- so if it's not in there it's a micro (there's 1 page in the new edition that shows a handful of micros). |

The UKMoths website also lists all species systematically by family order, but it doesn't state what is or isn't a micro or macro as technically there is no biological difference between them. Very handy to have all species listed like that though. Go to the very bottom of any page and click on systematic list.

| | | Re: Macro/micro categorisation Thanks for the replies. The fact that it doesn't work on size is the very reason I asked! I didn't know that the Small Magpie and Mother of Pearl were micros. I have no spare cash to buy books unfortunately otherwise I would definitely buy some as the ones I have are not great . Perhaps I'll get in touch with the County Macro Recorder for a list as Widiot suggested if there isn't an online version.
Thanks again,
Jo

Looking at Chris Manley's 'British Moths and Butterflies' the 'true' macro's seem go from 1631 upwards so if you check the name on UK Moths you'll get the number and from that figure out whether its a macro or micro. BUT there are what he calls 'honorary' macros that are usually included (and recorded) with the macro's, these moths are primitive but large:
Swifts: numbers 14 - 18
Leopards and Goat moths: 160 - 162
Forester and Burnet moths: 163 - 172
Festoon and Triangles: 173 - 174
Clearwings: 370 - 384 Hope that helps a bit! |

| | | Re: Macro/micro categorisation Thanks, that's great! I'll have a look at the Norfolk site too as at the moment I only use Hantsmoths and UkMoths.

At the end of the day a moth is a moth, Micro or Macro shouldn't even come into it. It's a bit like separating grasses from the other wildflowers.
Bleedin' Taxonomists!

Adam
