| | | Beautiful moth Hi, Can anyone identify this tiny moth for me please? It's been in my garden for a couple of days, it seems to particularly like the thyme. |

| | | Re: Beautiful moth Yes, thanks Miss Caretaker, that's it I think.
Apparently they feed on mint and thyme, so that would make sense. |

I'm a newbie and still getting to grips with navigating around here. I'll have a browse. |

| | | Re: Beautiful moth This is actually P. aurata. The post median markings are wrong for purpuralis.

| | | Re: Beautiful moth Dr Moth I am a newbie too, but that moth featured on another one if not two threads today. I shall have to look out for the one I saw, as I am sure it is the one shown - it was feeding on thyme - is that a give-away?

| | | Re: Beautiful moth I can't tell if it's P. aurata or P. purpuralis as the only way I can tell for sure is to see the hindwing. P. aurata has no basal markings on the hindwing, whereas P. purpuralis has. In the moth shown here I can only really see a bit of the outer gold band. |

| | | Re: Beautiful moth OK, well it's still hanging around, so if anyone would like to define "post median" and "basal" markings for a beginner I'll go and have another look.
It'd be great to know for sure. |
