| | Moth identification help needed!
I have just started moth trapping in my garden and have managed to ID most of the moths so far, though I am going to be posting some more pics for confirmation and probably ID! The book I have is the Concise Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland, Townsend and Waring. It is the field guide with the laminated cover and spiral bound. The two pics above are of a moth I cannot find in there, closest I could find was Red Sword-grass but it appears too small for that and not as dark. Will greatly appreciate any help! |

I promised more and here's another one. I was thinking either Autumnal Rustic or Double Square-spot but not too sure. |

| | | Re: Moth identification help needed! Hi Metalmoth
The first looks like the Flame( Axylia putris),I put the latin name to help your internet searches,if you try putting Flame into a search engine on its own,it seems the last thing you'll find is the moth!

| | | Re: Moth identification help needed! Thankyou both. Ah yes I can now see that it is of course the Flame, I missed it in my book I was looking for an illustration of the moth from the side view, like how the prominents are illustrated. I shall try and take more care next time when I am looking through!
Yes I have since compared other photos of double square spot and autumnal rustic to mine and it looks most like doube square spot. |

I have just compared photos of the two and I can see a difference in the shape of the wing tips between the two. Is this the main diagnostic feature that should be used to tell them apart? Because when I was looking through my moth ID book I was looking at the patterns and the pattern on the moth I caught seemed to best match Willow beauty, however it does look quite faded, which would explain why I maybe did not match it to Mottled. Should you instead look first at wing tips and then pattern? |

Poplar Grey I think (but could be Knot Grass?):
I am not sure what this is. Maybe a Sword Grass of some kind?: |
