| | | Large moth for ID please hello
my name is Joe and i randomly took some photos of the biggest moth id ever seen, last year in middlesbrough wich is in the north east of the uk,
i was at work and it flew in, in my cabin,
iv recently looked it up online and its name is Poplar hawk moth or laothoe populi but thats only what i could find online,
Id like some help identifyin the species and wether its male or female and if iv got the rite name for it! if anyone can help be much appreciated!

| | | Re: Can you help me? Hi Joe, you have found out that this is a Poplar Hawk Moth (Laothoe populi is the scientific name). This is a male - the females have a fatter, rounder body.

Joe | Yes, it's the commonest and most widespread of the Hawkmoths in Britain. The caterpillars feed on various types of poplar and willow.
