Those are not Spruce carpet,they are Common Marbled carpet.

Oops, apologies James, I thought I could make out the Spruce Carpet markings on the wings - obviously not!

Looking at through my book, it says the flight season for the second generation of Common Marbled Carpet is late August - early October, even earlier in the north and at higher altitude. Is this quite a late individual?

It's a Common Marbled Carpet (Chloroclysta truncata). It belongs to the family Geometridae. It is sometimes placed in the genus Dysstroma. It is very common throughout the Palearctic region and the Near East.

Hi James,

I had one a week or so ago so they are still around in very small numbers, all be it slightly on the late side. It has been quite mild temps recently too. Individuals can always occur out of season as well for whatever reason, so published flight times aren't always reliable to go by for ID purposes
