Please can you identify this moth for me?

It was found in our green recycling bin today - possibly crawled out from dead leaves. It's beautiful, but doesn't look like anything in my books, or that I can find on the internet. Thanks, Christine

What a beauty! Looks like a Herald (Scoliopteryx libatrix) to me. Tx

Certainly a Herald- a beautiful moth- often overwinters in groups in outbuildings + even caves!

Thanks both of you. My Mum searched her reference books, and managed to find it too! We were all delighted to have seen it, and searching the photos on your website made us keen to look for more moths in the future.
