Unidentified moth

Can anyone tell me what this is. It was seen today and the photo was sent by a pal asking me to ID this 'butterfly'. It doesn't look like any butterfly I know! He said it was small (skipper size) and was in woodland in Oldham, Lancs.
Whatever it is, is it common/rare and any other info would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Common marbled Carpet Chloroclysta truncata

Very Common.

Well I never. I've caught these in abundance in my trap several years ago, but didn't recognise this example at all. Just checked UK Moths website and it does say they are very variable however.

Yes they do vary in colour from the specimen in your photo to a drab dark brown form.

It's the name I remember. Like I say, I've caught these in the past, but I'm sure the ones I caught didn't look like this.
