| | | Need help ID on this giant moth! A couple of days ago, during the late evening, this giant moth flew in to my bedroom and made such a noise it startled me!
IT was like a small bird flying around the room and eventually settled on the windows, where upon I grabbed my camera and took a couple of pics, before it flew back out of the window and in to the night.
It was about the size of my hand and in the picture you can see a nail in the window side for comparison. You can also see clearly how big it was compared to the side of the window easily covering the wingspan. Its hard to guess the exact size, but its the biggest moth I have ever seen in my life!
Can anyone identify this creature? |

For some reason I trawled through the many pictures on this site and many others and just couldnt come across it!
Are they (as the name would almost suggest) popular? I cant believe in 37 years I have never seen a bigger moth and until I started investigating this moth I didnt realise how many species and types there were in Britain alone, it truly is amazing |

| | | Re: Need help ID on this giant moth! They get their name cos the larval foodplant is predominantly Poplars, but they will also feed on Sallows and Willows.
Moths are great for sure - there are about 2500 species in Britain with so many spectacular looking ones. The Poplar HM you saw is one of the biggest we get here. They are common (the commonest of the British Hawkmoths) and can be found pretty much all over the place. |
