| | | Help with moth identification please These two were among several moths attracted to our bulkhead light last night. I think the first moth is Agriphila species, but have been through my field guide and UK Moths site and still can't identify the second one.
Thanks

Not sure about #2, doesn't look like a Currant Pug though. I think it could be a variation of Freyer's Pug Eupithecia intricata

| | | Re: Help with moth identification please I can see how you get tristella - the description on UK Moths says "...longitudinal streak which branches into 'fingers' towards the wing tip", which seems to stack up. Then again, I can see the resemblance to the Honeysuckle moth as well ...
Looking through the Pugs again on UK Moths, I am now wondering if #2 is a Grey Pug - there's two pictures, the second looks very similar to mine.

Phil | Try putting the pic side by side with yours, you will see how different it is to the Honeysuckle moth. It has a white strip down the back, a peak at the wing ends, and the antennae are held forward. Agriphila tristella has the stripe down the side like yours, end wing shape looks to match as well as antennae and snout. I haven't seen another in the same Genus (Agriphila) which looks like yours but I could be wrong.
The other does look like the form of Grey Pug, except they say it's dark grey. Pugs can be difficult. |

I've had trouble identifying Pugs (and not only Pugs...) before; I'm glad to know I haven't changed that much over the years
Thanks Janet |
