| | | Planting for Moths/wine ropes Hiya
Lots of stuff around on planting for butterflies - does anyone have any favourite plants for moths? The reason I ask this is because I have a small clump of Lysimachia barystachis in my garden which always seems to have moths resting or nectaring on it. The plant is popular with hoverflies in the day time, less so with butterflies (they seem to prefer Chieranthus 'Bowles Mauve' or Centranthus rubra).
I'm also interested in what concoctions folk would recommend to attract moths to a 'wine rope'. I tried one last night and all I saw on it was a large cricket! However, 3 feet to the left, on an apple that had been pecked by the birds I found a beautiful Red Underwing. This isn't my best photograph but I like the fact you can see that long tongue poking into the apple.
Regards

| | | Re: Planting for Moths/wine ropes I was told that for wine roping you should buy the cheapest bottle of red plonk you can find as these are nearly always more productive than decent wines.
Cheers,
Adam

| | | Re: Planting for Moths/wine ropes I tried a mixture which involved brown sugar, black treacle and brown ale - rum was an optional extra - I must live in a moth free zone because even that didn't entice any |

| | | Re: Planting for Moths/wine ropes my lavender and honeysuckle attract moths but naturegirl did do me a recipe for a moth rope but lost it lol
But it was with red wine and molasses sugar..
But the best way to attract them is to keep the bathroom light on all night and leave the window open. |

| | | Re: Planting for Moths/wine ropes Honeysuckle seems to attract nectaring moths. Another I find works is bladder campion.
Campions, in general, attract a few species of moth which lay their eggs on the plant - the caterpillars live on the seed capsules and can quite often be found there. Bird's foot trefoil and some bedstraws might also be good in the same kind of way. |

| | | Re: Planting for Moths/wine ropes You can try adding vanilla extract - but wine roping/sugaring is hit and miss, some nights nothing, other nights everything! |

| | | Re: Planting for Moths/wine ropes Thanks for the comments. This evening I went out in the garden with a torch and found that the most moth-iferous thing out there was the mesh bird feed (containing raisins and bits of windfall apple) on which I found an Old Lady, a dot moth and a lesser broad bordered yellow underwing!
