Black Butterfly or Moth ID please!

Hello! My first post on this wonderful site is to ask for an ID of a large black butterfly/moth.
I live in West Suffolk, near Bury St Edmunds, and encountered this large insect flying early evening yesterday. The wing span is 7cm. I've taken a photo but can't see how to upload it. Please help.

Hi, if you search down the postings for "large black butterfly" you will see athread for MICHELLE 1972 and on the second page my posting LUMINETTA where you can find alink to the nearest photo I could find of my sighting. It would be interesting to know if this matches your impression.
