| | | Shoulder-striped Wainscot? Hi,
I get confused with Wainscots! This looks to me more like Shoulder-striped Wainscot Mythimna comma but could it be a Smoky Wainscot?

| | | Re: Shoulder-striped Wainscot? Thanks Jenny, I had another which I wasn't sure if the underwing was smoky or not, the wings could have made it a Common! Variable little beasts they are |

| | | Re: Shoulder-striped Wainscot? Just to throw confusion into the mix again, I think the first two are Southern Wainscot (Mythimna straminea) - the apex of the forewing is more pointed than Smoky, and there is the suggestion on the first photo of the faintly blue/gree headband that readily distinguishes Southern.
As for the second moth, it may just be an optical illusion, but it looks to have a very long abdomen for one of the Mythimna wainscots. I would have liked to have seen a more settled photo to be sure, but it's probably far too late by now!
Best wishes,
Dave |

| | | Re: Shoulder-striped Wainscot? Thank you Dave, I did say they were confusing, lol!
If the last one doesn't quite fit Mythimna could you make any suggestion as to an alternative? Perhaps a tall order as I don't have another pic of it, but I do go out late at night to spot what turns up on my wall so I may get another chance!
I saw my first Elephant Hawk Moth last night feeding on a Rhododendron near the house, it was moving far too fast but I just managed to get two poor shots! |

| | | Re: Shoulder-striped Wainscot? Now I'm going to stir the pot! I know I will be disagreed with as I'm not supposed to have moths which are not said to be here, but I have some! In particular those which are said to be in East Anglia!
Look at this one, note the two vertical dark lines on the thorax hairs.
Fenn's Wainscot Chortodes brevilinea UKMoths - Fenn's Wainscot Chortodes brevilinea
OK, so they fly in late July and August!
