| | | Is this a Blood-vein Hi all.
Took this photo today, and the nearest I can get to an ID is a Blood-vein moth. However the Blood-veins in the Gallery seem to have a pronounced coloured edge to the wings where this one hasn't but I can't find anything else that it could be.
Can anyone confirm the ID please |

| | | Re: Is this a Blood-vein Could it be a small blood vein? (Scopula imitaria) it looks very similar but the colour is less pink (according to a website about moths in the UK) the wingspan is 26-29cm although it says the wingspan of the blood vein is 23-28cm which doesn't make sense saying the small blood vein is bigger than the blood vein!
I am interested in your post because i saw my first blood vein last night and i managed to get a photo, like you i noticed the red line was not as red as i have seen in other photos, although mine does have a noticeable pink fringe on the edge of its wings so i think what i saw is a blood vein but i discovered about the small blood vein today trying to find a photo of a blood vein with similar colour "vein" as the one i saw.
The other thing that interests me is in your photo there seems to be a very small notch cut out of the left hind wing, my moth has exactly the same feature in almost the same place, is that just a coincidence?
here is my moth for comparison |

| | | Re: Is this a Blood-vein LOL, i just realized i said the wingspan can be up to 29cm, slight mistake, i meant 29mm! Thanks for confirming the identity of my moth for future reference how to i distinguish a blood vein with rather drab red line from a small blood vein? | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
