| | | moth identification This moth appeared on my window last night:
I believe it's a sort of carpet moth, but I'm not sure exactly which one. It most resembles a Beech-Green carpet, but it doesn't have the white edging on the central band. I'm also in Surrey, whereas it prefers upland areas in the north and is rare in the south. Anyone have any ideas? |

| | | Re: moth identification Hi Pete - and welcome to the forum. I hope you find it as useful as I do!
I'm not an expert on moths, but I think there's a Green Carpet (Colostygia Pedinataria) that's active in the south of England. It couldn't be this, could it?
If this doesn't help, then I'm sure one of the more experienced lepidopterists will be able to confirm the ID for you.
Best regards,
Derek |

| | | Re: moth identification Thanks for the welcome. Usually my book is good enough for identifying most insects, but this time it's not quite up to the job!
The Green Carpet doesn't look quite right, it doesn't have the black band which is pretty obvious on the photo. The green is also fairly solid, unlike the mottled appearance of mine. |

| | | Re: moth identification I agree it looks like a Carpet moth but I can't find that exact one in my book or on the UKMoths website. Their search on UK carpet moths only brought up these. |

| | | Re: moth identification Ah yes, a Yellow-Barred Brindle it is. I was tricked by the picture in my book showing a older specimen without the black band, whereas mine is a fresh specimen. Thanks to everyone for the help, especially Chris. I'm sure I'll be back soon. |
