Hello, I've Just seen a hummingbird hawkmoth!!

Hello! Just joined this site as i was sat watching Tv only 20 minutes ago and saw the strangest of creatures buzzing around my trailng geranium hanging basket! Had to go on the internet to see what it was (husband was convinced it was humming bird!!) and found out it was a humming bird hawkmoth. I tried to take a picture but the light was fading. I live on the north lincolnshire border. is this a normal area to spot such a moth?

There have been a couple of posts on here today about the HHM, if you search them you'll find photos too.

Down here I see them regularly usually around honeysuckle, they are being seen up and down the country now but seem to less rare in the south.

Not too sure about what areas they are in, but I have seen them recently as well. I live in Hampshire.They are just amazing. Welcome to the forum by the way.

I have seen hummingbird moths down here on the kent coast for the past few year and like you first time I saw one I wasnt sure what I was seeing!

i may be wrong but dont they come over from france hence why we get lots of them down south? im sure i heard someone say they migrate from that area?

Book says from Southern Europe, & North Africa, most numerous near the south coast, but has reached all parts of the British Isles & Channel Islands. Suspected breeding resident in south-west England, where it hibernates in small numbers.
