| | Hummingbird Hawkmoths Been following the msgs regarding the "invasion" of these beautiful moths. On Sunday evening (6th) I saw some insects buzzing around my budlea and was very pleased to see a Hummingbird Hawkmoth and several Silver Y's (plus a huge Bee!) We watched this for ages - its only the second one we have seen in the UK. Monday night was even better when we had 2 Hummingbird Hawkmoths, loads more Silver Y's, and a hedgehog wandered out to see what was going on!
Last night - Tuesday, nothing, except the hedgehog which is feeding on the peanuts and seeds dropped from the bird feeders.
I'm in Wickford, Essex, where it seems that there has been many sightings of the Hawkmoths. Lets hope they become very regular vistors! |

Welcome to WAB. Yes, we seem to have a lot in the Essex area, my girlfriend saw some only the other day and I got my best pics of them this year too. Here are my pics http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-13708.html http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...age-13442.html

| | | Re: Hummingbird Hawkmoths Last evening I saw one on the garden soapwort patch where I've seen it for several days.
I lay on the ground with my head close to a flowerhead and, sure enough, after only a minute or so the HHM came and fed from the flowers on the flowers only about 6 inches in front of me. Absolutely fantastic
I could here the buzz of the wings and felt the wind as it flew in.
