| | | Giant Moth A while back I found an absolutely huge moth in my hall way. Being too chicken to take it out myself I got a friend who captured it in a pint glass and released it. It lieterally looked the size of a small bird. I live in kent and would love to see one again. Does anyone know what sort of moth this could have been and what I cound do to attract them to my garden?
many thanks

| | | Re: Giant Moth Definitely a hawk-moth of some kind. If you want to identify it browse the names on this website address http://ukmoths.org.uk/search.php?entry=hawk-moth. Sure you will find out what it is, regards Nicola. |

| | | Re: Giant Moth Try Hawkmoths (especially Privet & Convolvulus, although I'm not sure either of these would fit in a pint glass), Old Lady, Copper Underwing, Large Yellow Underwing, Emporer, Oak Eggar and Fox moths (the last three unlikely) |

Would you believe I've never seen one? Where would I be likely to find one? And how?

| | | Re: Giant Moth Well, I don't think there are many people who could go out and find one at the drop of a hat - but if you are in an area where there are plenty of privet hedges, leave a window open and the light on, and as well as millions of mossies, and daddy-long legs and assorted other flying creatures, you may get one of these. But they're big beasts, and you'll know when one has entered the room! Alternatively, a walk round at night looking at what is flying round security lights might produce results (including getting arrested!). Or find your local moth group and go out with them one night.

| | | Re: Giant Moth Local Moth Group? As much as I love insects and stuff, I doubt I could join a Moth Club! Do a lot of tight-fisted men go and just open their wallets?
