| | | Re: garden moth for id please :) Leifus, now compare this moth to the other picture that you thought was a Wainscot and you will immediately see the difference!
This is a Common Wainscot.

| | | Re: garden moth for id please :) It possibly is Common Wainscot but beware Smoky Wainscot. I have been catching these and were convinced they were Common until I saw the dark underwing. Common have white, Smoky have dark.
Even the wing shape have been similar due to wear so that isn't always a true indication. Don't go by colour either as both moths vary.
I wouldn't like to confirm what this moth is without seeing the underwing.
Here is a Smoky with it's wings closed then another image with them open on the same moth. Also note the wing shape and colour.
I know the 2nd image looks lighter in colour but the sun came out then and bleached out the colours a bit.

| | | Re: garden moth for id please :) I went to Cornwall for a few days birding with my mate and managed to do one two hour moth trap on Tuesday and my mate managed the same on the Sunday (in-between the rain showers). Some good moths were caught, although not too many moths were trapped overall. I thought you would like to see a few of them, some are firsts for the Gallery.
1 Yellow-barred Brindle. (Trapped by my mate)
2. Cypress Pug (Trapped by my mate) (a first for the Gallery)
3. Dark Spectacle (Trapped by me) (a first for the Gallery)
4. The Delicate (trapped by my mate) This is an immigrant.
5. Frosted Orange (trapped by my mate)
6. Pink-barred Sallow (trapped by my mate)
7. Rosy Rustic (trapped by me)
8. Pyrausta despicata (trapped by me) (a first for the Gallery)
9. The Nutmeg (trapped by my mate)
10. Small Wainscot (trapped by me) (a first for the Gallery)
11. Common Marbled Carpet (trapped by me) (An unusual colour form for this moth)
12. Burnished Brass (trapped by me)
12. Knot Grass (trapped by me)
That's it for now.

| | | Re: garden moth for id please :) Thanks for sharing those with us John- a productive trip despite the rain. I know it's a common moth, but the Burnished Brass photo in particular is stunning- such wonderful colours. There's a couple there like the Small Wainscot + the Delicate that I haven't seen. |

| | | Re: garden moth for id please :) I have to agree. Burnished Brass is one of my favourite moths. They always looked polished up, even when they start to wear.
