Unknown Moth/Butterfly ID Needed Please

Need help in the Id of this specimen please do not know if its a Moth or Butterfly taken in garden today it wa son a pansey

Silver Y I think, but I am sure that someone with more experience in moths will be able to confirm.

It looks right... though I was also thinking of a Skipper sp., just because of the way it was holding it's wings and the fact I've never seen a Silver Y with it's wings open!!

It was very fast and did not stay still for any tyhing more than 3 secs then it was off again wings were usually flapping if thats what you call the action

Definitely a Silver-Y- normally a very common migrant moth- sometimes I've seen c50 in the garden nectaring at Red Valerian + other plants. This year I've only seen 1 ( acouple of weeks back) anywhere- a really poor year for migrants.

Glad to read that it is a Silver Y cos I thought there may be a slight possibility it was a beautiful golden Y instead cos I think Big Bill comes from up north so there was a possibility these were still on the wing. Good to know my id skills are not complete gone to pot.

This is definitely a Silver Y!

Sadly, we have not had the numbers of these down south that we usually would have???

Don't know why but they have just not been on the wing this year?!
