| | | Moth for ID please Hi,
Think this is probably a micro moth, about 1cm long, seen in a buddleia bush at Northward Hill last Sunday...
My first thought (being pretty hopeless with moths) was that it might be a grass moth such as Agriphila tristella but the eyes are too big and too green.

| | | Re: Moth for ID please I would go with your first guess actually.
Another couple to try would be C. culmella or A. inquinatella.
This group is notoriously difficult but remember that there are many variations to species. Your specimen looks fairly worn which doesn't help.
I was convinced that I had found a new Pyralid until a friend brought his Continental books over. We discovered that the English photo was of the female which was very different to the male, different colour and hind wing too!!!

| | | Re: Moth for ID please Aww, thanks for that Jason!
Even my friend said it looked distinctly different when he saw it and he IS an EXPERT!!
What a shame that we had to look in Continental books to give it a positive ID!
We should have been able to find it in an English book.

| | | Re: Moth for ID please Bless you for that Jason!
It does show up an inadequacy within the English books though does'nt it?
Why can't they show both sexes if they are so very different?
I wish I had the time to write an up to date book on Pyralids especially but....
I'm currently seeking employment within the teaching fraternity!!

| | | Re: Moth for ID please I agree with A. geniculea. Here are a couple of photos of mine. The first a well marked one, the second quite worn.
Naturegirl has suggested C. Culmella. I don't think it's that. Here is a photo of one I have trapped.
Regarding her other suggestion A. inquinatella. I don't think it's that either. Here is a photo of one I trapped on 28th August for comparison.

| | | Re: Moth for ID please Many thanks all!
Nice to know I got the genus right - makes me feel like I am actually learning something!
