| | | Unknown moth for ID please I took this photo of a moth in the garden back on the 8th august, it was originally on the lawn (I was about to cut).
Trying to remember back it was maybe 20mm from head to tail
Any ideas? |

Square spot rustic hold their antenae backwards over their body.
The 'underwings' hold them out in front like this picture.

| | | Re: Unknown moth for ID please It's definitely not a Least Yellow Underwing. I have had a go at darkening the photo and you can see the markings better now.
I would go with Neil's ID of Square spot Rustic.

Drawn to the words "unknown moth" like a.... moth to your moth trap!
Cheers for the suggestions. I'm confused tho (even more so than normal) looking at the lesser yellow underwing it does seem to be much more of a reddish brown than my moth, also in the picture on ukmoths the antennae seem to be going over the back whereas the Square-spot rustic's antennae seem to match mine more...
Here's a couple more pics of mine |

Cheers for your help John, I must have been (slowly) composing my reply while you were already replying.
I think that does make the ID clearer. |

| | | Re: Unknown moth for ID please Ok, try Least yellow underwing.
Sometimes pictures are taken just a tad too close for my liking (getting old!!!)
I still don't think it is Square spot rustic but will happily admit to being wrong if proven otherwise, and will learn from this.
I'm probably the only woman on this planet who will actually admit to being wrong sometimes (although rarely ) and will appologise for that fact if needed!

still sticking to square spot rustic, all the markings fit. I can't see any that fit Least Yellow Underwing.

I am really surprised you are sticking to Least Yellow Underwing. If you take a good look at the darkened image that I have posted you can see a definite kidney-mark and oval, something a Least Yellow Underwing hasn't got.
I still go for Square-spot Rustic.

| | | Re: Unknown moth for ID please having looked again at the Least Yellow Underwing photo's I've thought of something that presumably is really obvious but only I could answer...
When trying to chivvy the moth to a safer place before just picking it up it's wings were open and I don't remember seeing any really obvious markings like the LYU has...
It may have helped if I'd mentioned this when LYU was first suggested!
of course this could be an old faded exaple with very faded "underwings" but | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
