| | | Moth for ID please This chappie was on my kitchen celling all day.
So it got this pic while he was posing.
We get lots of moths now I may look to getting a trap, they seem a bit easier to photograph than butterflies and they are lovely.
Any tips on moth traps for beginners would be great. |

| | | Re: Moth for ID please Hi Kayleigh, just got your message!
Have been sitting outside Tescos (forever) waiting for the RAC to come and rescue me and just got home!
It was 'just' a fuse! How was I supposed to know that??!! He was a miserable blighter too!
Moth is Willow beauty and they (larvae) feed on Hawthorn, Yew, Privet, Birch, Ivy and Traveller's joy (wild Cematis).
I had another Old lady in my moth trap last night!! My inebriated friends at my local wet themselves with laughing at that one!!
Don't know why they think I'm so strage.........

| | | Re: Moth for ID please Kayleigh and Dutchess, look on the Anglian Lepidopterists website. They are also a registered charity and are much cheaper than I've seen anywhere else.
If you don't mind having a white sheet on the ground then I'd go for a Skinner trap. This is basically a plywood rectangle which is hinged on the corners for ease of storage and carrying to other locations. It has two pieces of perspex which are at an angle downwards into the centre where the light fitment is on a piece of wood across the length of trap.
Jason has been trying to make one all summer out of cardboard, bless!!
Need any more help, please just ask! My first trap was an old metal biscuit tin!

| | | Re: Moth for ID please Thank you everyone for the id.
Thanks Nature girl just looked on the web site and book mark it..Sugaring sounds good as I have always got wine and string handy..
Thanks also for the info on what the larvae feed on I have a small hawthorn hedge in the garden. Its nice to know what feeds on what.
I will leave the home-made attempts to Jason..
If he finds a way that works I will quiz him for details. I won't hold my breath. Bless him..
Glad to help Duchess..
We can compare notes when we get started. |

| | | Re: Moth for ID please Hi Kayleigh! Hic!!
Sugaring can be done by smearing said 'mollasses mix' into/onto the bark of trees so you don't need anything more, hic!
You don't need to wast wine on this!!
This normally only attracts the Red/Ruby underwing
type of moths in my experience.
One of my moth buddies rang tonight to say that he had found a Blue underwing (Clifton nonpariel) sitting on a fence post!!!!!!!!!
Jammy git!!!

| | | Re: Moth for ID please Ha! It seems I don't need a moth trap! My bathroom light seems to do the trick! We have a very small bathroom (6' x 6'6") the window of which looks out on to our rather leafy back garden. The light was accidentally left on last night and the window left wide open. I went to the loo at about 3am and the place was full of moths!
But where do they all go? This morning they'd all (bar one) disappeared???
