Moths for ID

I think these two waves are different species, definetly different moths though.

1. Could this one be a Plain Wave?

3. Tortrix? But which?

4. Muslin footman?

1 & 2 both look like Riband Wave
No3 Chequered Fruit-tree Tortrix
No4 Udea prunalis

I think you have in 1 and 2 a Plain Wave-Idaea straminata, check out UK Moths, No1715 for Plain Wave, and 1713 for a comparison to a Ribband Wave- Idaea aversata

The difference between Riband wave and Plain wave is that the Riband wave has the outer line turning in at the apex of the wing and the Plain wave has no sign of turning in at all. They can be tricky to identify as Riband wave are variable and some are more defined than others. I only get maybe one or two Plan waves per year here, the rest being Riband waves including the banded type.

Thanks all! My moth numbers are looking quite respectable on the Back Garden moth survey now - but I need every ID I can to submit - I can't compete with those who trap as it is .
