| | Absolutely Huge Moth I had a huge moth flapping round my garden last Saturday in the blazing hot sunshine. Quite scary looking, so wimpish as I am about insects, I had to go indoors and watch it through the window. It hung around for ages and rested a few times on the walls mainly. It was a dull brown colour with no obvious distinctive markings. However, it's actual body was huge and the abdomen was very long and curved upwards at the end, tapering slightly. I'm trying to find out what it was but can't find anything that somes near to its description. The total wingspan was about 3 inches. Anyone help? Cheers. |

Cheers,
Adam | Me too. I'd say they are the most common hawkmoth and I've often seen them curling their abdomen.

| | | Re: Absolutely Huge Moth Hi Kazbat! What a whimp you are! It is a MOTH you silly! Moths can't bite or hurt you in any way at all. It does sound like a Poplar hawk moth or maybe an Eyed hawk moth, both of which curl their tail upwards. All other British hawk moths keep their bodies straight. I had a lovely fresh Eyed hawk moth in my trap this week and it was very creamy coloured compared to others that I have seen. Hope this helps in future.

Poplar Hawkmoth would be my bet to.
