| | | National Moth Night/my first Hawkmoth Tonight is apparently national moth night!
I am feeling chuffed as tonight is my second night of running a moth trap and I have my first Hawk moth(never seen a native hawk moth) I am sure it is a Lime Hawk moth?
They probably are very common but I am chuffed to bits anyway.
Anyone else crouching out in the drizzle staring at a light bulb?
Finally if I was to pot the hawkmoth until the morning should I put it in a dark room? or as John mentions else where on this site place it in the fridge?
Regards and if mothing this evening good luck.

Gary | Ok its just left of the lurpack spreadable,I would never thought of putting a moth in a fridge!?!
Anyway at least the mini babybels are there for company and a fair few of you say that moths in the fridge are no problem to its health..

| | | Re: National Moth Night/my first Hawkmoth Hiya, never worry about putting a hawkmoth or any other in the fridge, it just sends them into a state of suspended hibernation. They will come to no harm for a few days or so there.
The alternative is to let them go and hope they make it to wherever they are going. This is something I do regularly whether I can Identify them or not as I do not believe that I have the right to decide on their future.
This action is viewed upon with disgust by some 'Lepidopterists' but I live by my own laws in this context and care not for their thoughts on this matter.

| | | Re: National Moth Night/my first Hawkmoth I put the trap out at work overnight on the 7th/8th and caught 42 species (plus unidentifieds). Highlights were; Goat Moth; Poplar, Lime, and Small Elephant Hawk-moths.
Cheers,
