| | | Re: Garden moths 2008 I must admit to being pleased with my garden moths at the moment. Apart from the moth meets my garden stands head and shoulders above those that are recording in Warwickshire for sheer numbers and variety.

| | | Re: Garden moths 2008 I trapped from 10pm to 1am on Monday (23rd June) night and it was quite productive

helped. In the end I caught 125 moths for 28 or 29 species. I still

plus a couple of Pugs which could both be Common but I am still
working on them.
The catch was:

9 x Small Magpie
9 x Bright-line Bright-eye
5 x The Flame
5 x The Snout
4 x Common Marbled Carpet
4 x Dark Arches (the photo is of a Melanistic form. I had never seen one before & I caught two that night).
3 x Large Yellow Underwing
2 x Beautiful Hook-tip
2 x Flame Shoulder
2 x Green Pug
2 x Marbled Minor agg
2 x Clouded Silver
2 x Rustic Shoulder-knot
2 x Crambus pascuella
1 x Crambus lathoniellus
1 x Chrysoteuchia culmella
1 x Garden Carpet
1 x Fan-foot
1 x Bee Moth
1 x The Spectacle
1 x Barred Yellow
1 x Pale Prominant
1 x Foxglove Pug

The rest of the catch consisted of:
1 Common Lutestring (new for the garden)
1 x Blood-vein
3 x Buff Ermine
6 x The Flame
1 x Large Yellow Underwing
2 x Small Magpie

2 x Spectacle
2 x Bright-line Brown-eye
1 x Scalloped Oak
1 x Ingrailed Clay
1 x Common Emerald

Your getting a quality catch also. The moths there that I have yet to see are Lobster Moth, Common Lutestring & Privet Hawkmoth.
I would be well impressed if I got those in my garden.

What a lucky guy you are! No pun intended
I am a regular moth recorder but i've never seen a Cloaked carpet!
Can I ask which area are you?
I record in Hamstreet and regularly get Scarce Merville du Jour, such a beautiful moth!

Naturegirl | Thanks Naturegirl, I live in Dorset where apparently Cloaked Carpets are expanding their range, it was very nice to find although it can't compete with a Scarce Merveille du Jour, that's one that I'd really love to see one day
I had the trap out last night, I caught another (or the same) Cloaked Carpet and had 4 new species, conditions weren't very good and still a lack of Hawkmoths There seem to be some second generation moths appearing now, e.g. Nut-tree Tussock and Pale Prominent have reappeared.
Here's the list, photos to follow tomorrow hopefully:
Coxcomb Prominent x 2 (new for me)
Rustic x 3
Nut-tree Tussock x 1
Buff Ermine x 10
Common Footman x 10
Small Phoenix x 1
Rosy Footman x 1
Snout x 1
Small Emerald x 1 (new for me)
July Highflyer x 2
Bright-line Brown-eye x 2
Buff-tip x 1
Buff Arches x 1
Peppered Moth x 1
Dun-bar x 1
Small Magpie x 1
Large Yellow Underwing x 1
Smoky Wainscot x 1
Pale Tussock x 1
Small Fan-footed Wave x 2
Early Thorn x 1
Cloaked Carpet x 1
Clouded Border x 3
Slender Brindle x 1 (new for me)
Coronet x 1
Lesser Yellow Underwing x 1
Clay x 1 (new for me)
Common Rustic x 1 | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
