Swings and roundabouts - dependent on which part of the UK you are in - I have never seen so many as I have this year here in South Devon , especially day time flying ones

I think the eggs of the Garden Tiger Moth on my window ledge must have died, they all seem to have what looks like pin pricks in them??
Endquote
Sounds as if they might have been parasitised by something (parasitic wasp, possibly). The window sill might have been a bit exposed. Any chance of a close-up photo?

and i havent seen one hairy caterpillar yet! bit disappointed actually because I have never seen one before.

They should certainly have hatched by now.

| | | sorry, i cannot get a close up of the garden tiger moth eggs on my windowsill. Mainly because I am rubbish with a camera and I dont know how to get it from my phone to the computer but its not a very clear picture anyway.
They look all brown and they all have like pinpricks in them, and they are very dry, absolutely no sign of life. And no sign of life in my hanging baskets either. |

| | | Never mind - I'm fairly certain that the pinpricks are signs of having been parasitised. Keep an eye on them, as something might hatch out (but not a caterpillar, hairy or otherwise).

| | | Re: Garden Tiger Moth Hi,i recently repotted a house plant with compost from my garden,i noticed the next day that i had a black hairy caterpillar on my net curtain, thinking it may have been living on the plant i left it be.Two days later i noticed it had started building a caccoon.I did'nt know what it was so looked it up and i think its a garden tiger moth, however the sites i have visited have all said that it should'nt pupa until july,it is only march now is this normal. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
