| | Moth confusion
I have a moth that looks like a faded Common Marbled Carpet (complete with 'cloud' in the middle of the wings), but the tip of its abdomen is pointing upwards, just like a Phoenix. Does the Common Marbled Carpet do the same thing as the male Phoenix with the tip of its abdomen, or is it just a Phoenix that looks like a CMC?
Any help gratefully accepted.

Yes quite a few of the geometers have this bums-up resting posture.

| | | Re: Moth confusion - photos I've taken some photos now of this moth. What do you think? I reckon it's a well worn Phoenix, but I'm open to any other thoughts.
1. This isn't its resting posture, but note the upturned abdomen tip.
2. Now the abdomen in its resting posture.
3. And the view from above - note the scale loss and generally worn appearance.
Best wishes,

Definitely Common Marbled Carpet, too late for Phoenix apart from anything else. I see what you mean about the abdomen - very odd!

| | | Re: Moth confusion Agreed. I've found that quite a few of the Carpets use this posture from time to time, also the Festoon is famous for resting this way
