This is one from my garden in Cumbria in June which I have never identified with any certainty. I felt the most likely was Tawny Shears but the dark zig zag line across the middle has always puzzled me & there is no obvious bullet/tooth mark in the centre .

Hi Peter,

It could be a Dusky Brocade - although there are slight differences, namely the dark bar near to the trailing edge, which is not present in your specimen. Some of the differences could be put down to it being a worn specimen. The Dusky Brocade's flight period is June-July.

I'm pretty happy that it is the Tawney Shears Hadena perplexa. its quite a faded specimen and id is not helped when the wings are slightly "ajar".
