Maybe the moth was sampling it?

| | | Re: Can moths bite??? Hey people here. Im in New Zealand. A huge moth just flew into out room.
My brother is very afraid of moths and just backed into a corner.
I tried to get it out with bare hands but because of the light it flew back in.
It seems to have bit me..
End of story I got it out with a blanket cover and by turning the light off at the right time.
It was most definitely a moth not a horse fly. |

I am surely glad that I don't live in N.Z. if you have such moths over there!!
I thought that the only flesh eating moth was in the southern USA?

| | | Re: Can moths bite??? I remember seeing photos and scientific paper on African Blood Sucking Moths which seem to belong to the same genus of moth that suck juice from fruit but it was good few years ago and I no longer have the references for this stuff.
It is possible that a person with delicate skin could mistake the grip of a moths toe claw for bite.

| | | Re: Can moths bite??? I had a few minutes to myself today and just "Googled in" "Biting Moths".
To my surprise these have been known for years but only identified as being capable of sucking Human Blood in 1999 (I am sure that the paper that I read was from a study in the 80s)
They are a genus Calyptera? or something similar. They are in Southern Europe and are already in Finland. There is no reason why they cannot be in The UK as well.
If you do Google "Biting Moths" then click on the link "Vampire Moths invade Finland" there is nice photo of a moth sucking blood from someones thumb.
