| | | Re: Elephant Hawk Moth Catterpillar Oh I've been so worried! Gosh it's bloomin' hard work being a EHM mummy!
Denzel hadn't moved for nearly 4 hrs this afternoon - thought he'd snuffed it After my trip up the reservoir earlier I gathered some lovely dry soft moss and some dried grass and put them in his tank when I got back at 2.30. He wandered about for a bit then just stopped, but hadn't done anything, just stopped.
I'm so relieved as I've just seen him pulling bits of grass towards him - phew!
You could have told me that caterpillars have naps! |

| | | Re: Elephant Hawk Moth Catterpillar It's been 2 weeks since I put Denzel in the garage and it seems he's done the business!
I didn't touch him but gently scooped him off the soil with a tablespoon and he twitched! He's now on some kitchen towel in a tupperware pot (lid just on) and back in the garage. Hafta wait till spring now....

| | | Re: Elephant Hawk Moth Catterpillar Cazzie, I think it would be better it you put a bit of soil or compost in the container together a few twigs and leaves. That would create the natural environment which could be important when the moth emerges. |

| | | Re: Elephant Hawk Moth Catterpillar Erm well Lance (and I think Harry) said they'd kept theirs on kitchen towel/cardboard and before spring put in twigs etc for it to climb up onto when it emerges? I'll happily put it on some compost etc. if you think I should. The soil and leaves that were in the tank had little mold spores on it when I looked today, that's why I chucked it all out.

| | | Re: Elephant Hawk Moth Catterpillar I honestly just caught one in my garden, hes sat next to me in a little jar with paper on *air holes* - I was going to use kitchen roll but he looks like he could get out of it hehe
I live on a council estate and lack his favoured food, any ideas what I could possibly give it? I've tried 3 types of leaves to see if they interest him but so far nothing yet. Do I need soil in the bottom of the jar and do they drink too? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
