| | | Help to ID a freshly emerged moth Hi, could anybody help identify this species of moth?
I think it is a noctuid, but it kept its wings folded back after I placed it on the bush, and it didn't fly, so I think it had just emerged and it was drying its wings |

| | | Re: Help to ID a freshly emerged moth it could be an early or canary thorn moth which naturally holds its wings upright as opposed to flat. |

| | | Re: Help to ID a freshly emerged moth I had a look at photos of the thorn moths and they have different patterns under their wings, and different faces. The moth I saw was not yellow, was a tawny colour and its eyes were tawny too. It could be that if it was freshly emerged it kept the wings backwards to allow them to dry? It might not be the most common posture once they were dry. Also, when I picked it up from the floor it felt 'fresh' it didn't try to fly or flapped its wings, and it was running on the ground. |

| | | Re: Help to ID a freshly emerged moth I immediately thought of thorns because of the overall colour but, I agree, not of the markings or wing shape matches. Don't take eye colouration as meaningful; usually, they just reflect what is around them.
I have not heard of any moths drying their wings in an uncharacteristic manner after emerging but I could be wrong. From what you say, it certainly sounds like it was freshly emerged or that something was wrong with it.
We'll have to keep thinking... |

| | | Re: Help to ID a freshly emerged moth Funnily enough, I think I've solved the problem. I was looking through my moth photos when I came across a series of Angle Shades, and the shape of the head and general colour coincide. Being quite a common species in my garden I think this was most likely the freshly emerged moth.
Cheers everybody!

Navigation isn't initially straightforward: choose Hauptseite and then index A-Z.
Angle Shades pictures are at this location:
