| | | 2 micro moths for ID if poss' I am hoping there is enough detail in these photo's for ID's.
The first was about 1cm in the helychrysum in the rain.
This was also about 1cm but had a narrow body on the Mahonia.
Thanks. |

David | Hi David , you could be well be right about the size being wrong, but it certainly was no bigger than 13mm. Quote:

Adam | Thanks Adam, it does look like several of the Crambids, but I wouldn't want to plump for any specific one. I am happy to be able to note the family though. |

David | I would think this would have to be put down as a Rustic agg. Even if the photos would have been perfect the chances of separating Uncertain, Rustic and Mottled Rustic are slim to the less than very trained eye.
The other I agree is a Chrysoteuchia culmella (AKA Garden Grass-veneer)

Mottled Rustic is actually quite easy to separate from the other two. The markings tend to look 'smudgy' and the forewing has a silky sheen to it - I think both of these features can be seen in the original photo but it's not good enough to be sure.

David | Hi David
It sounds like you know what you are looking at but I did say that to the untrained eye there could be problems in separating them.
Even with Mottled Rustic there can be variables to throw you. I am in the Warwicks yahoo moth group (warwickshiremoths@yahoogroups.com) and also in the yahoo group (Gardenmothscheme@yahoogroups.com) and in both they always state that it is very hard to separate these three and some of these guys are real experts.
Some can work them out quite confidently (I'm not one of them) but a lot can't. If you are one of those that can I take my hat off to you. I wish I could reach that level of ability but I fear I am a long way of that mark.

Hi John,
I'm not trying to claim to be an expert (I'm not) nor am I saying that this is definitely a Mottled Rustic but I am surprised that it appears to be a problem species to separate from Uncertain and Rustic. I'm also in several e-groups (not the ones you mention) but I don't recall this coming up as a regular ID problem. Apart from the features I mentioned in my previous post a reasonably well-marked MR will show no sharply defined light surround to the stigmata which should mark it out from even the most poorly marked Uncertain/Rustic/Vine's. Of course a worn Mottled Rustic can look like pretty well anything!
