It might be best to put it out after dark so the ants don't get a chance to get to it. These solutions are attractive to some species and not others, so you'll be limited in the number of species that you see, but some pretty spectacular moths are meant to be attracted, like Red Underwings.

| | | Re: attracting moths There are many different types of recipes to attract moths.
Its a bit like fishermen with there secret potions and baits.
Molasses is often used as the bulk of the ingredients. Other things that can be used such as Red wine, Old banana's and dark Ales (Stout)
I have tried some in my own back garden and the first thing I learned was don't put it on your fence posts! Because during the day every wasp in the neighbourhood will be in your garden. Paste it onto something that you can put away during the day.
There several different types of moth that will prefer to go to a sugar solution rather than a light trap. Red Underwing is a good example.

| | | Re: attracting moths Another common recipe is to boil-up Newcastle Brown Ale with brown sugar into a runny treacle and drip this onto trees and fences etc.
Strange but true - use the cheapest roughest red wine you can find for wine roping. The moths like the rough stuff better. Perhaps they evolved in Essex
