Butterfly or Moth - what's it's name?

Hi,
New to here - hello all.
We live in a very rural part of Cumbria & recently on walks we've noticed alot of small, Black (could be dark brown) butterflies or moths - they're distinguished by a clear white streak on the forward wing. They are only about 15mm long - but I can't find them in any guide - does anyone have any clues - due to recent awful weather I've been unable to get a pic.

Thanks - having looked it up in my moth book the description is spot on- the pic in the book doesn't show the distinctive white marks so I'd skipped by.
