| | | Re: moth id .. spruce? Depends when the pic was taken. If it was taken recently I'd say Spruce Carpet, my book says grey pine carpet is on wing from late July to November.
No doubt someone with more knowledge will chip in sooner rather than later and I'd be interested in what they say.......

| | | Re: moth id .. spruce? Definitely Grey Pine Carpet. Spruce Carpet has obvious white edges to the central band on the forewings. Grey Pine is double brooded, flying from May - July, then again in September - October, although of course those flight times can be extended either way these days!

Andy | cheers...
just looked in Skinner and i now agree...
the examples in Waring confusing... no second white line near base of wing in GreyPC examples.

| | | Re: moth id .. spruce? A good 'illustration' (excuse the pun) of why it's a good idea to own Skinner as well as Waring if you can afford both. I know a lot of people can't get on with the plates showing moths in set positions, but it's always useful to compare an unknown moth with photos as well as illustrations. I actually don't own Waring, and have managed perfectly well with Skinner for the last 20 years!
