A week or so ago I found a green caterpillar on my roses. I first thought it was a swafly grub but folk around here think its some kind of lepidopteran larvae. Since we couldn't identify it I decided to put it in a jar and watch what it turns into.

The first Sawfly hatchling investigated the rose bush from where it had originally come from almost as soon as it had hatched. Within about 30 seconds another Rose Sawfly turned up as if by magic and made himself known.
There was no mating, our Rose Sawfly doesn't put out on a first date. She found a stem and stuck a little saw from her abdomen into the stem.

Exciting things are happening to my Rose Sawflies. As you may recall, having found tiny rose sawfly caterpillars on my roses I took some into captivity for observation and left some on the bush. By observing what the captive sawfly do and become I should stand a better chance of phoographing a Rose Sawfly cocoon out in the wild. Check out these pictures.
