I've seen these a lot back home, so when I read the texts were in German I thought I'd have a look. According to most of the texts the beetle is found in Siberia, north, east and south europe and as far west as France. So they are pretty rare here (Blood-red running beetle)Ampedus sanguinolentus
There is also another 'blood-red running beetle', Ampedus sanguineus, they live mostly in mountainous areas and are rarely found in the flatlands.
Difference in the trees I suppose?
