John....My opinion..and it is only mine, is that you spend as much as you can on the lens, once you have decided the system you are going...in my case, and it seems in yours,canon, to go with. So I parted with lots of cash for the lens knowing that I'll have to change my camera sooner or later, and probably more than once or twice in my lifetime. There is no way technology is going to stand still. So a good lens, well looked after should see me right for quite some time...and bodies.

That said, i don't really know to much about your sigma. But my father has recently got himself a sigma 150-500, which I haven't had a play with yet, but I know Wayne...welsh.lensman has the same lens and his pics are superb. Try the beanbag, it's the cheapest way to get a good support and get as close as you can.

I look forward to seeing some more of your shots.

Thanks Martin, I see you have already answered some of my asks, lucky you!! the lens you are using is on my wish list now I know why your shots are so sharp plus a good steady bean bag which I know should make a big difference.

I have not been into photography all that long only used a point and shoot but moved up to DSLR to try my hand at photographing birds, lots more involved with a medium format camera than first thought. I use a Canon eos 1000d and the lens I use for birding is the Sigma canon fit 170-500mm f5-6.3 APO DG but finding I wont get the photograph results I want unless I move on to a lens similar to your own that's my thoughts anyway.

Hope to speak again soon and I will watch for anything new in your Gallery.. Regards John.

Hi John, thank you for your kind words...I am relatively new to this site myself,though I have been interested in photography for many years.

At the moment I am using a canon 400d camera, which is my first dslr...It took me ages to move from the old 35 mm and only now am I getting to grips with the whole concept. That said,I have now bought into apple and aperture 2, so that I can shoot in RAW, and I am now looking to upgrade to a new camera, again a canon,though not sure which model yet.

My main lens for wildlife photography is a 100-400l series is lens, which, although I carry a tripod virtually everywhere, seem to rest on a bean bag most of the time.This combination works for me, it is quick and easy, and the lens gives very impressive results,even with the 400d.

Hi Martin, John here had a look at your Gallery and some of your shots are superb, could you let me know what your set up is? I also enjoy Bird photography however being new to DSLR they are no where near as good as your own so looking for all the tips I can get : - 0
