I wonder if you are near to Salisbury? I grew up in Salisbury. Spent my misspent youth wandering around the water meadows at Stratford Sub Castle looking for birds, fishing on the Avon (actually didn't have a fishing license - whoops!) and watching the wildlife at Old Sarum. With so many rivers (5) coming into Salisbury you can usually see waterlife somewhere. I used to find Harnham watermeadows good (apparently there is a nature reserve there now??). I also spent a lot of time by the river in the Woodford Valley. Plenty of places along the road where you can stop near to the river and just "watch" and "paddle". I also loved the countryside around Stonehenge (lots of butterflies). If you need any other ideas, let me know! Jane
