- 12-01-2011 08:00 PM - permalinkDeb LondonHi Spiky,
I've created a WAB group for conservation volunteers, if you are interested:
Wild About Britain - I love getting down and dirty, wild and free!
Deb - 24-12-2010 10:04 AM - permalinkDeb LondonYou are my hero Spiky, doing that volunteer work. Have a good festive season, even if you don't do Christmas,
Stay safe and warm,
Deb - 06-12-2010 03:26 PM - permalinkDeb LondonBrilliant Spiky. Bloomin' 'eck, teach me tree felling one day will you? There must be a better way than I do it, LOL. ;-) Should go and speak to Woodman, hee, hee.
It's very rewarding volunteering, I quite agree. - 03-12-2010 07:08 PM - permalinkDeb LondonHi Spiky,
How's the volunteering going? Hope you're still managing to stick at it.
Deb - 26-10-2010 05:20 PM - permalinktheresa dockeryLet me now how you get on with rearing them, when they decide to start laying!
I don't know if you're a member of 'Stick Talk' ? Stick Talk - the stick insect discussion group
It's a great place to discuss & get advice on rearing phasmids - many people on there seem to also be rearing giant millipedes, mantids...even velvet ants (!). - 25-10-2010 11:00 PM - permalinktheresa dockeryHeteropteryx females can be real stroppy! It does vary - some individuals are tamer. I had one very angry female who would hiss loudly if I so much as tapped the cage & would lacerate my hands every time I tried to handle her. The life-cycle is very slow (freshly laid egg > mature adult = up to 3 years) & they take up so much space: well worth the effort though, if you have the patience! :)
At the moment I keep only Eurycantha calcarata, Aretaon asperrimus & Trachyaretaon bruekneri.
Years ago, I tried (unsuccessfully) to rear a Phyllium species....I was unable to get the hatched nymphs to feed. Are they quite tricky or was I just unlucky? - 25-10-2010 08:19 PM - permalinktheresa dockeryIt's a close call between E.Ts & Heteropteryx, for my all-time favourite phasmid: they have such marvelously ornate spines/leafy-appendages and autumnal colouration...delightfully inquisitive too!
It's a shame I had to cut back on the number of species I keep - I have less time these days to devote to such hobbies. - 25-10-2010 02:22 PM - permalinktheresa dockeryI love the beautiful E.tiaratum in your avatar - It's been awhile since I've kept those!
